About the project

The invited Ukrainian experts will shed light on modernism in Ukraine using examples from music, film and literature and discuss the current challenges in their work as artists and cultural managers. The programme “Echo of Ukrainian Modernism” offers the opportunity to learn more about a decolonial approach to the heritage of Ukrainian modernist artists and to discover other phenomena of Ukrainian modernism.

Like the exhibition, the accompanying programme is dedicated to the legacy of artists such as Kazymyr Malevych, Oleksandra Exter and Oleksandr Bohomazov, who for years were perceived as representatives of the “Russian avant-garde”. Yet they lived and worked in Ukraine and influenced the development of modernism in Europe with their work.

The programme was curated by the Ukrainian Institute, the Museum Ludwig and the Federal Agency for Civic Education/bpb.
