The focus of this year’s Ukrainian program at the Frankfurt Book Fair is “Reclaiming the Voice”. This year Ukraine participates on the international stage, demonstrating its strength, diversity and uniqueness of its literature. As part of the program, the organizers are showcasing new voices in Ukrainian literature, presenting current German translations of Ukrainian works, and discussing classics, reportage, and poetry.
The Ukrainian Institute has invited five contemporary Ukrainian authors to take part in the program. Among them is Sofia Andrukhovych, this year’s winner of the prestigious Hermann Hesse Literature Prize for her novel “Amadoka”. This work was published in German translation by Alexander Kratochvil and Maria Weissenböck in three parts. The author will take part in various events at the Frankfurt Book Fair and at the Ukrainian national stand.
One of the most important events of the Ukrainian Institute at the Book Fair is the presentation of a catalog of contemporary Ukrainian literary translations. This will take place on October 17 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. The catalog was compiled by the participants of the Ukrainian Institute’s translation school in Germany over the course of a year and will be presented by Kateryna Rietz-Rakul, the director of the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, among others.
Four authors whose works are included in this catalog will participate in the presentation and other events of the Ukrainian program. These are the renowned writer, translator, and scholar Yevheniya Kuznetsova, the writer and poet Anna Gruver, the writer, poet, and reporter Myroslav Laiuk, and the historian and scholar Radomyr Mokryk.
Kateryna Rietz-Rakul will also attend the official opening of the Ukrainian stand on October 16 and the presentation of the essay collection “The Future We Strive For” on October 19 from 3:00 to 3:50 pm.
Alim Aliev, deputy director of the Ukrainian Institute, will participate in two further events: “The Power of Resistance: Truths and Myths about Occupied Crimea” on October 17 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. and “In Search of Ukrainian Identity” on October 19 from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m.
