On International Women’s Day, Tetyana Filevska will give a lecture on the painter and stage designer Oleksandra Exter.

Exter was born in Białystok in 1882. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Kyiv, where she studied art and began her artistic career. In 1907, she moved to Paris, where she lived for many years and remained until her death in 1949.

Oleksandra Exter was strongly influenced by Suprematism and was friends with Kazymyr Malevych, among others. In Paris, she was part of the avant-garde art circles and was in contact with the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire and the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. Her work was characterised by abstract, formal compositions. Oleksandra Exter is considered one of the most influential artists of her time.

The lecture will take place as part of the exhibition “Ich weiß, daß ich mich verdoppeln kann” (“I know I can double myself”) by Gisèle Vienne and the Puppets of the Avant-Garde. This exhibition shows reconstructed marionettes that Exter exhibited in Herwarth Walden’s gallery Der Sturm in 1927.
