In the early 1930s, several foreign journalists reported from the Soviet Union. Many of them knew about the famine in Ukraine and discussed it among themselves. However, the Welsh journalist Gareth Jones was the first to tell the world about it.
The film “Mr. Jones” by Agnieszka Holland tells his story. After the British journalist Gareth Jones wrote a report on Adolf Hitler in the early 1930s, he wants to know how Stalin is financing the rapid modernization of the Soviet Union. But his journey does not lead him to the interview with Stalin he had hoped for. What begins as research soon turns into a tough fight for survival in the Ukrainian winter. Back in the UK, Jones has to fight for the publication of a truth that nobody wants to hear.
What information was provided by journalists and what information was provided by Kremlin propaganda about the famine in Ukraine? What is the role of journalists in times of war and other crises?
We will discuss this with historian Dr. Franziska Davies and journalist Thomas Franke before the screening.
